If you give a man a fish,
it will feed him for a day.
If you teach a man how to fish,
it will feed him for a life time.

So let's teach you how to fish!

Pizza - A college student's best friend!

Here is a recipe for quick, easy, adaptable mini pizzas.

What you need:
1 can of biscuits
cheese
1 small can of tomato sauce
Italian seasoning
Garlic and Onion Power
Your favorite pizza topping (suggestions include pepperoni, Canadian bacon and pineapple tidbits, chicken and green peppers (pictured), chicken, zucchini and corn, pepperoni and pork sausage, etc)

How to make it:
Check the can of biscuits for oven temperature (normally 375 F), turn the oven on and let it preheat while you prepare the pizzas. On a cookie sheet place four biscuits and flatten. In a bowl mix tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, Garlic and Onion power (or, you can buy pizza sauce). Place 2 spoonfuls of the tomato sauce on each biscuit. Add pizza toppings and top with cheese. Bake in the oven according to biscuit directions (normally 13-15 minutes). Prepare the remaining biscuits after the same manner.

Serving size: 2 pizzas
Number of servings: 4
Suggested side dishes: sugar snap peas and crackers or a salad.

Kitchen Tip
Cover your baking sheet with aluminum foil - it makes clean up a breeze!

Craving some Asian cuisine? Here is a place to try:
Saigon Cafe at 440 W 300 S Provo
They have a good variety at a decent price. I went for dinner and got one of their meal/combo options which included Egg Drop Soup, Pork Fried Rice, an egg roll, and a good portion of Sesame Chicken. It was fantastic and all for under $7. But don't just take my word for it - go and check them out!

Broccoli, Tomato, Sausage Pasta Toss

What you need:
1 box Rotini Pasta
1 package Cherry Tomatoes
Head of Broccoli
1 package Sausage or Kielbasa
1 jar Alfredo sauce

How to make it:
Start water for the pasta. While you wait for it to boil start chopping! Chop the broccoli into bite sized pieces. Then cut the tomatoes in half and dice sausage. When the water begins to boil add the pasta and cook according to package directions. When there are 5-6 minutes left add the broccoli to the pasta. Drain pasta and broccoli when time is up. In the empty pasta pot add the sausage. Depending on how you like your sausage, you can just heat until it is warmed or brown it a bit. Then add the tomatoes and heat for a bit. Return the pasta and broccoli to the pot. Pour the Alfredo sauce on top and stir. Serve hot.

Number of servings: 6
Price per serving: $1.57
Total price: $9.41
(prices will vary by store, these items were purchased at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on University Parkway)

Easy Omelets

What you need:
Eggs
Your favorite omelet ingredients (such as ham, cheese, spinach, green peppers, tomatoes, etc).

How to make it:
In a sandwich sized plastic bag crack two eggs. Seal the bag and shake/squish until eggs are "beaten." Add omelet ingredients to the bag, press the air, seal and shake. Place the bag into boiling water and cook for 11-15 minutes (depending on how much stuff you have in your omelet). Be careful when taking the bag out of the boiling water and the omelet out of the bag - steam can burn! The best way I have found is to cut the top of the bag off with scissors and then just slide the omelet out. Don't put anything that has too much liquid in the bag (salsa, for example) or you get really runny omelets.

  1. Ever woken up and wanted a breakfast pastry directly from the kitchen table of Diety? Look no further than Provo's very own Hruska's Kolaches! (Located at 434 W Center St)

Each visit to Hruska's is not just an errand or a casual food-stop. It is a gosh darn amazing kolache experience. Let me paint you a picture for you new-timers. You walk in there, the whole place greets you with a "Howdy, Y'all!" You hear the Houston radio stations (which are the best radio stations) in the background, see the Texas flag and the pears and frames on the wall, and you know these are about the coolest folks that could be running the place. You're already loving your day before it's even your turn to order. It's your turn, so you try to narrow down the dozens of delicious options and settle on your faves and maybe try a new one. (The new one will probably become your new favorite! #labombacarnita, anyone?) You either sit at the window inside, or on one of the tables outside, and sink your teeth into the soft, better-than-your-grandma's-dinner-rolls bread. The first bite lets you really appreciate the bread they make, their recipe is truly amazing. I wish I could get a cake made with just that dough. The second bite you really get to the good stuff, whether it be Sausage, Gravy, Pulled Pork, Eggs, Cheese, Chicken, Avocado, Onion, Bacon, Ham, Tomato, Potato, Cream Cheese, any fruit you can imagine, or any combination of the above. WOW It's hot! These things are fresh! The center is the best it gets, all that sweet or savory goodness. YUM! You wonder why you haven't done this before, and you sit, look around at everyone enjoying their kolaches, and you realize the Provo is one of the coolest places (outside of Texas). You get to that last bite, that has a fantastic ratio of filling/bread, and wipe tears off your face as your finish, because of what you just experienced, coupled with the fact that you are just too full to go back for seconds. So you say, I'll be back soon. Then you go about your day, and daydream about the next time you'll get to have your favorite kolaches from the people who know kolaches better than anyone, the Hruska family. A bit poetic, perhaps, but these guys really are the best. My wife and I go AT LEAST once a week, and can't get enough. I'm so glad they started this business here in Provo, if you're in Provo or a surrounding area, and you haven't been here, you are missing out on a HUGE piece of the Provo experience. Stop reading this and get over there. Follow them on Insta, FB and twitter, they'll post pics of their levels once they get close to sell-out each day so you know what you can get if you're looking for the best bruch you ever had. You're still reading this, GO! 434 W Center St, across from the Covey Center. You'll be glad you did!
